ITSMF Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement and Pledges to Bridge the Diversity and STEM Gap

#GivingTuesday

ITSMF has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

ITSMF leverages #GivingTuesday to remind people of its commitment to increase the representation of black professionals at senior levels in technology, to impact organizational innovation and growth. We want to re-energize our members, partners and alliances during this season of giving so that we can continue the great work that we do here at ITSMF.

The US Census reports that, on average, 7.3% of the computer operations positions are held by Blacks, 6% by Hispanics and 25% by women.  Of the 25% held by women, 10% are women of color with Black women representing 3%, 5% are Asian and 2% are Hispanic. Despite increases in workforce diversity initiatives and STEM advocacy on a student level, there is still so much work to be done.

We have been proud to partner with many corporations, organizations and individual supporters to develop and nurture technology leaders through enrichment of the mind, body and soul. Our inaugural Annual Fund fuels ITSMF’s operations which support the mission and vision of the organization. Your individual donations can supplement critical areas of the organization such as:

  • Event programming and content
  • Leadership development programs
  • Networking, mentoring and internships for students
  • College scholarships
  • Community outreach and STEM advocacy

In addition to financial support, we exist because of individuals who share their time and expertise to nurture existing and future leaders through mentoring and skills development. This #GivingTuesday, consider giving to an organization that is strengthening the current and future pipeline of diverse technology professionals.

92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2016, the fifth year of #GivingTuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our sixth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”
